About Deer

About Deer

Deer are hoofed mammals belonging to the family Cervidae, a diverse group that includes whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, moose, caribou, and many other species. Deer are found across much of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, living in habitats ranging from forests and grasslands to mountains, wetlands, and Arctic tundra.

One of the most recognizable features of deer is their antlers. In most species, adult males grow a new set of antlers each year, which are later shed and replaced. Caribou are unusual because both males and females can grow antlers. Antlers vary dramatically among species, from the branching racks of whitetail and mule deer to the massive antlers of elk and the broad, palmate antlers of moose.

Deer are herbivores that feed on grasses, leaves, shoots, twigs, fruits, and other vegetation depending on their habitat and the season. Their impressive bucks, graceful does, spotted fawns, seasonal migrations, and ability to thrive in remarkably different environments have made members of the deer family favorite subjects for wildlife watchers, photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature lovers.
