About Colts & Fillies
About Colts & Fillies
Young horses are generally called foals during their first year of life. More specifically, a young male horse is called a colt and a young female horse is called a filly. Foals are typically able to stand and begin walking remarkably soon after birth, an important ability for an animal whose ancestors depended on staying close to the herd.
As they grow, young horses spend considerable time playing, running, and interacting with their mothers and other members of the herd. These early experiences help them develop coordination, strength, social skills, and an understanding of the behavior of other horses.
Colts and fillies can vary tremendously in size, coloring, markings, and appearance depending on their breed and ancestry. Their long legs, curious expressions, playful behavior, and energetic movement make young horses especially endearing subjects for equine photography.
