Pangolins are unusual mammals best known for the large, protective scales covering most of their bodies. They are the only living mammals with this type of extensive scale covering. When threatened, many pangolins curl into a tight ball, using their tough overlapping scales as armor against predators.
Pangolins are found naturally in parts of Africa and Asia, with different species inhabiting forests, grasslands, savannas, and other environments. They feed primarily on ants and termites, using powerful claws to open nests and long, sticky tongues to collect their prey. Depending on the species, pangolins may spend much of their time on the ground or climbing trees.
Eight living pangolin species are recognized, with four native to Africa and four native to Asia. Pangolins are generally secretive and mostly nocturnal, making encounters in the wild relatively uncommon.
