About the American Black Bear
The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is the most widespread bear species in North America.
Black bears inhabit forests across Canada, the United States, and parts of northern Mexico. Despite their name, their fur can vary widely in color, ranging from black to brown, cinnamon, and even blonde.
Highly adaptable and intelligent, black bears are excellent climbers and strong swimmers. Their diet is mostly omnivorous, including berries, nuts, plants, insects, and fish. Although they are powerful animals, black bears are generally shy and usually avoid human contact whenever possible.
As important members of forest ecosystems, black bears help disperse seeds and contribute to the natural balance of the wilderness landscapes they call home.
