About Icelandic Horses

About Icelandic Horses

The Icelandic Horse is a distinctive breed whose history in Iceland reaches back more than a thousand years. The ancestors of today's Icelandic horses were brought to the island by Norse settlers, and centuries of relative isolation helped preserve the breed's unique characteristics and remarkable adaptation to Iceland's challenging climate.

Icelandic horses are compact and sturdy, with strong bodies, thick winter coats, and abundant manes and tails. Although relatively small in stature, they are considered horses rather than ponies. The breed is especially famous for its unusual gaits. In addition to the familiar walk, trot, and canter, many Icelandic horses can perform the smooth four-beat tölt, while some can also perform the fast-paced flying pace.

Known for their hardiness, versatility, and spirited personalities, Icelandic horses are used for riding, competition, recreation, and travel across Iceland's rugged terrain. Their flowing manes, colorful coats, distinctive movement, and dramatic homeland of mountains, waterfalls, snowfields, and volcanic landscapes make Icelandic horses especially memorable subjects for equine photography.
