About Pikas

About Pikas

Pikas are small mammals recognized by their rounded bodies, short limbs, large ears, and almost invisible tails. Although their appearance sometimes causes them to be mistaken for rodents, pikas belong to the order Lagomorpha, making them close relatives of rabbits and hares. Different species occur across mountainous regions of North America and Asia, where many live among rocky slopes, talus fields, and alpine meadows.

Rather than hibernating through winter, many pikas spend the warmer months collecting grasses, wildflowers, and other vegetation. They carry this material back to sheltered locations among the rocks and create stores commonly called haypiles. Their distinctive high-pitched calls help pikas communicate and can also warn others when predators are nearby.

Pikas are remarkably adapted to cool environments, making them one of the most characteristic small mammals of alpine landscapes. Their energetic behavior, expressive appearance, and dramatic mountain surroundings make Pika calendars especially appealing to wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone who loves the beauty of high-country nature.
