About Manta Rays

About Manta Rays

Manta rays are large, graceful marine fish belonging to the same broad group of cartilaginous fishes as sharks and other rays. Their broad, wing-like pectoral fins allow them to glide effortlessly through the water, creating the distinctive flying appearance that makes mantas favorites among divers and underwater photographers.

Unlike stingrays equipped with defensive tail spines, manta rays do not have a venomous stinger. They are filter feeders, swimming through plankton-rich water while using specialized lobes near the mouth to help direct food inward. Mantas may travel considerable distances between feeding areas, cleaning stations, and other important habitats.

Two recognized species are the reef manta ray and the giant oceanic manta ray. The giant oceanic manta is the larger of the two and can reach an impressive wingspan of more than 20 feet. Manta rays are also known for large brains relative to their body size and complex behavior, adding to their reputation as some of the ocean's most fascinating fish.
