Alligators are large, powerful reptiles belonging to the crocodilian family. Two living species exist: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. American alligators are found primarily throughout the southeastern United States, where they inhabit freshwater swamps, marshes, lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers.
Alligators are well adapted to life in and around water, with muscular tails that provide powerful propulsion while swimming and eyes and nostrils positioned near the top of the head. They are opportunistic predators that feed on fish, turtles, birds, snakes, and mammals, with diet varying according to the animal's age, size, and habitat.
Female alligators build nests from vegetation and remain nearby to protect their eggs. After the young hatch, mothers may continue guarding them for an extended period, making alligators notable for their parental care. Alligators also play an important ecological role in wetland environments, where the depressions known as alligator holes can retain water during dry periods and provide valuable habitat for other wildlife.
